In 1920, Greeley Country Club opened its doors after Tom Bendelow staked out a private 9-hole course and modest clubhouse. Tom Bendelow, nicknamed "the Johnny Appleseed of American Golf," is noted as the course designer to over 600 golf courses around the country, most notably Medinah Country Club and East Lake at the Atlanta Athletic Club.
Renovation
In the 1960s, with a boom in the game, the club brought in Press Maxwell to complete a renovation of the course. He designed an additional 9 holes, thus comprising the 18 holes that are seen at GCC today. Along with the increase in popularity for the game of golf came the need for a more expansive clubhouse. In 1962, the existing clubhouse was torn down and a new state of the art facility was created.
While the building remains the same, Greeley Country Club has been re-modeled with historic charm in mind to suit its 100-year history. With all the modern amenities found in the Country Clubs of today, it is important for us at Greeley to maintain our Country Club’s historic aesthetic. The timing could not be better as we recently had our centennial celebration.
